Three college students majoring in agricultural education were awarded the Fall 2026 Mia Balko Student Teaching Scholarship from Texas Farm Bureau (TFB).
The scholarship recipients are Tarleton State University students Destiny Barron and Kailey Kuntschik, and Texas Tech University Emma Talley.
The scholarship, valued at $6,000, will assist the students in the fall semester during their off-campus student teaching experience.
“These three college seniors have a passion for agricultural education,” Dr. Clarissa Darby, Texas Farm Bureau Youth Outreach coordinator said. “As they balance their coursework with time in the classroom, these scholarships provide financial support that allows them to focus on preparing the next generation.”
Many students must travel or temporarily relocate for the semester, which adds to the financial demands of completing their degree.
“Off-campus student teaching gives future agricultural science teachers invaluable, hands-on experience alongside veteran educators,” Darby said. “It equips them with the tools and confidence needed to step into a growing demand for ag teachers.”
Since 2018, TFB has supported students like Talley, Barron and Kuntschik by helping offset financial expenses associated with the student teaching semester.
The scholarship was renamed in 2021 in honor of the late Mia Balko, who administered the scholarship program and was an agricultural science teacher for many years prior to joining TFB.
“Each scholarship recipient was selected in honor of Mia’s legacy, and we’re confident they will carry that forward as they pursue careers as agricultural science teachers,” Darby said.
Another round of scholarships will be offered for agricultural education majors who will student teach in the spring 2027 semester. Applications will open this fall.
