A farmer from Waxahachie received the most votes for the title of 2014 National Farm Mom of the Year. The newly earned title is just one of many for Heather Dineen. She is a first-generation dryland farmer, a relatively new job for Dineen, but she has a great love of agriculture and is ready to share her family farm story.
In April, the American Agri-Women and Monsanto selected Dineen to be one of five regional winners in the contest. All contestants were recognized for their commitment to their families, farms, communities and to agriculture. The five moms received a $5,000 cash award. From those five regional winners, America determined the top winner of “farm mom of the year.” Dineen will receive an additional $5,000, according to an agency news release.
John Paul Dineen, her husband, combined his and their kids’ nominations into one essay, saying, “There have been lots of struggles establishing and maintaining our farm, but Heather always helps us keep going—whether she’s earning grocery money with a paper route, sewing old clothes into new ones or just helping me fix equipment.” He also added, “We love farming, and no matter how hard things get, she always makes time to visit schools and share our ag story.”
