Tom Green County Farm Bureau (CFB) hosted a Back the Blue event on Aug. 11 to thank and recognize first responders in the area.
“We decided to host a Back the Blue breakfast to show our support for local law enforcement,” Brady Weishuhn, Tom Green CFB president, said.
The county organization purchased about 600 burritos from three restaurants in San Angelo.
Tom Green CFB collaborated with the city and county officials on a date, time and location to host the drive-thru breakfast. They also delivered burritos to seven fire stations in San Angelo and donated some to the food bank.
“We met with the heads of the sheriff’s department, a constable and the police department,” Weishuhn said. “We felt like they needed some extra support and a pat on the back to know that our organization is behind them and appreciates them.”
That appreciation is especially noted during the hot, summer months.
“After this heat this summer and the way the last couple of crops have burned up, farmers are a little frustrated with Mother Nature,” he said. “We’re still trying to grow crops, but with it being this dry, we’ve struggled and dealt with several fires.”
Dry conditions fuel those fires in the area, and first responders have rushed to help.
“You can smell the smoke in the air, and you can see the flames. It’s pretty dry out here,” he said. “It’s important to have a good relationship with local law enforcement and the fire departments when these fires start.”
Tom Green CFB used the Farm Bureau Feeding Texas Co-op Contribution Program to help offset the costs for the event, Weishuhn noted.
Through the program, Texas Farm Bureau will match a county Farm Bureau donation of up to $1,000 for a food-related project during the coronavirus pandemic.
