Two Texas Farm Bureau members were recognized as Outstanding Agriculturalists by Texas Tech University for their contributions to various areas of agriculture.

Wayne Schilling and Dee Vaughn were honored by Texas Tech University’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources as recipients of the Gerald W. Thomas Outstanding Agriculturalist Award on Nov. 9.

Schilling was recognized for his contributions in agribusiness and Vaughn in agricultural production.

Schilling, a Lubbock County Farm Bureau member, was born and raised near Hereford before opening an agricultural compost business in Slaton in 1979. The family business composts cattle manure at feedyards across the Texas Panhandle. The Schilling family also farms cotton and manage their cow-calf operation.

Schilling has worked with the Southwest Council of Agribusiness, United States Compost Council, Texas Nursery and Landscape Association and Texas Cattle Feeders Association.

Vaughn, a Moore County Farm Bureau member, grew up near Plainview before continuing the family tradition of farming. He and his wife, Terri, grow corn, cotton, sorghum seed and wheat on their farm near Dumas. His time with the Corn Producers Association of Texas, Texas Corn Producers Board and Southwest Council of Agribusiness has lead him to work on policy and regulatory issues in farm policy, energy, transportation and trade.
