With much of the Lone Star State in extreme or exceptional drought, the cotton crop outlook will be hit or miss, even with recent rains.

Southwest Farm Press reported that cotton specialist Dr. Gaylon Morgan said planting intentions, as announced recently by the National Cotton Council, may well hold up, but harvested acres could be another story if the drought doesn’t let up.

In March, the National Cotton Council predicted double-digit percentage increase in plantings over 2013. During extreme droughts, planted acres do not always equate to harvestable acres.
