According to Texas A&M Forest Service, the South Plains area of Texas is experiencing “above normal temperatures,” high winds and a low humidity percentage. When these components are combined, this is considered “high impact fire weather.”
The areas of concern include Abilene, San Angelo, Midland and Lubbock. Callahan County, which underwent a 642-acre fire that started Jan. 30, is also included.
Preventative measures recommended by the Texas A&M Forest Service include:
–postponing outdoor burning,
–be cautious with projects that could cause a spark,
–fully extinguish smoking materials in an ash tray,
–avoid idling and parking motors in tall, dry grass, and
–report any grass fires to the authorities.
