The Sorghum Checkoff is taking aim at the sugarcane aphid, a relatively recent pest to grain sorghum capable of devastating losses, according to Southwest Farm Press.
The checkoff will commit $350,000 to control the pest. This investment will help ensure farmers have the tools they need to be successful.
Sugarcane aphid management efforts will be in collaboration with Dow AgroSciences and will include a national focus to find best practices to deal with the increasingly damaging pest.
“The sugarcane aphid has proven to be one of the most significant pests to sorghum in recent history,” said Justin Weinheimer, Sorghum Checkoff crop improvement director.
