Farmers in Throckmorton and Shackelford counties are seeing more quail than they’ve seen in perhaps a decade thanks to good rainfall and active land stewardship practices.

“We’ve got lots of good grass and lots of good forage on the ground right now,” Glen Webb, a Throckmorton County landowner, said. “It’s great.”

Webb and other landowners utilized the dry ground created by the drought over the past few years to dig out tanks and watersheds. Those efforts have now paid off.

“They’re all full,” Webb said. “I’m seeing watersheds and tanks I’ve never noticed before.”

Available water and forage on the ground is making for a wonderful home for wildlife this year in those counties.

“It seems like when it rains, it rains wildlife,” Webb said.
