The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a proposed rule that would relax registration requirements for some establishments, such as farms, that sell food directly to consumers, according to Drovers CattleNetwork.

The proposed rule would amend the definition of “retail food establishment.” FDA currently defines a retail food establishment as one that sells food products directly to consumers as its primary function.

It is estimated there are approximately 71,000 farms that primarily sell food products direct to consumers by means such as farmers markets, roadside stands and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs.
