The deadline to apply for Texas Farm Bureau’s (TFB) 2017 Young Farmer & Rancher (YF&R) Discussion Meet is Nov. 1.

“The Discussion Meet contest provides young farmers and ranchers the opportunity to explore the issues facing agriculture that are as diverse and complex as Texas itself,” TFB Director of Leader Development Whit Weems said.

Five agricultural-related topics are selected prior to the contest. The contestants are provided with information about these topics weeks before the contest in order to prepare.

One of the five topics is chosen for each four to five person panel, and a 25-minute roundtable discussion ensues.

Contestants must be TFB members under the age of 36 who are actively engaged in farming and/or ranching.

TFB will reimburse up to $200 in travel expenses per contestant to individuals who participate in the contest at the organization’s Annual Meeting Dec. 2-4 in Frisco.

The three finalists will each receive $500 cash, courtesy of Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company, and a power tool, courtesy of Grainger.

The winner of the state competition will receive a $5,000 cash award, courtesy of Capital Farm Credit; an ATV, courtesy of Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company; and an expense paid trip to the 2018 American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

The winner of the state competition will also represent Texas at the national YF&R Discussion Meet during the 2018 AFBF Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

The deadline to apply is Nov. 1.
