Training efforts this year to help local law enforcement and first responders better handle emergency livestock calls have earned the Cherokee County Farm Bureau a trip to the national convention of the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF).
Cherokee County Farm Bureau was selected as one of 24 winners nationwide in the AFBF County Activities of Excellence (CAE) program.
The livestock handling training session sponsored by the Cherokee County Farm Bureau and the local AgriLife Extension Service attracted representatives from six volunteer fire departments and two law enforcement agencies, along with the county Emergency Management Coordinator.
Speakers presented information on animal handling techniques for cattle, horses and dogs; examples of situations they might encounter; and research on animals and how each species processes threats and their reactions.
The livestock officer with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department provided examples of situations he has encountered. He also gave insights on the temperament of different breeds of cattle.
Possible emergency situations might include downed fences, flooded areas and vehicle accidents. Attendees were presented tools to assist them in handling livestock in emergency situations.
Cherokee County experienced rain, hail, floods and tornadoes in 2016. These events damaged miles of fencing, destroyed corrals and toppled trees.
Cherokee County Farm Bureau leaders said it was evident in the recovery effort that many of the first responders and law enforcement officers who were assisting had very little knowledge of animal handling techniques.
Leaders said those involved in agriculture often take for granted their knowledge of livestock handling techniques and think others possess similar experience and ability. One instance of herding cattle with lights and sirens proved that assumption incorrect, Cherokee County Farm Bureau stated in its CAE application.
In recognition of their work, Cherokee County Farm Bureau representatives will display their activity and participate in the Farm Bureau CAE Showcase at the 2017 AFBF Annual Convention and IDEAg Trade Show in Phoenix, Ariz., Jan. 6-11. The program, which highlights innovation for county program success, received 154 entries.
