More than 180 students across Camp County now know more about agriculture thanks to the efforts of an ag day.
This is the second year the Camp County Youth Project Show hosted the event.
“During our ag experience day, we invite all of our 4-H and FFA members that are exhibiting at our show, whether it be livestock or skills expression, as well as all of the schools within Pittsburgh ISD and home schools,” Staci Lowe, Camp County Youth Project Show treasurer said. “The students come to the ag barn and get to learn more about agriculture and each organization.”
The event has several stations that feature livestock, including chickens, rabbits, swine, goats and steers. They also had an agricultural mechanics station and spotlighted the opportunities available through FFA and 4-H.
“Some of them have never ever seen livestock before in their life, and they got to be one-on-one with the animals and learn more about the rural way of life,” Lowe said.
Texas Farm Bureau’s mobile learning barn was also at the ag day. It helped students better understand how products they use every day get their start on Texas farms and ranches.
“Ag Days give students the opportunity to learn more about Texas agriculture,” said Greg Mabus, Texas Farm Bureau field representative, said. “The stations provide a fun, hands-on learning experience, while live animals and demonstrations bring agricultural concepts and information to life for the students.”
The ag day hosted students in elementary school and junior high from Pittsburgh ISD and area homeschool programs.
