Lake goers are urged to clean their boats after use, especially during the summer months, to prevent spreading zebra mussels.
The invasive species can cause tremendous environmental and economic damage. They can also hurt aquatic life, damage boats and even threaten water supplies, according to TexasInvasives.org.
Despite their small size, a single zebra mussel can produce up to one million microscopic larvae.
The invasive species has been found in Lakes Texoma, Ray Roberts, Lewisville, Bridgeport, Lavon, Waco, Dean Gilbert and Belton.
Boaters are encouraged to drain the water from the entire boat, including live wells and bait buckets, before leaving the lake. Boaters should also dry the boat and trailer for at least a week before re-entering the water.
