The Oklahoma Forestry Service (OFS) reports 367,620 acres of pasture and farmland has burned since the Anderson Creek wildfire started March 22. The original estimates were much higher at 397,420 acres.
The Anderson Creek wildfire is the largest wildfire in Kansas history.
Easter Sunday snow and rain helped extinguish some fires and provided much needed moisture to dry grass.
About 90 percent of the fire has been contained, but firefighters are preparing for extreme fire weather to return.
“Crews are continuing efforts toward containment so the line will hold if fire weather returns to critical conditions,” George Geissler, director of OFS, told AgWeb.
There are more than 80,000 cattle in the combined fire zones in Barber County and Comanche County—both in Kansas–according to 2015 U.S. Department of Agriculture data. And an additional 75,000 in Woods County, Oklahoma.
OFS officials say the wildfire has killed an estimated 600 head of cattle in Oklahoma. Kansas has not released any agricultural loss estimates at this time.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
