Applications are now open for a new grant program designed to strengthen Texas agriculture and help farmers and ranchers start, grow or expand their operations.
The Agriculture Production Resource Opportunity (AgPRO) is a new initiative launched through the Texas Agriculture Finance Authority and administered by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
The program provides financial assistance to farmers and ranchers for projects that support the creation, expansion and long-term sustainability of their operations.
AgPRO was made possible through HB 43, passed during the most recent legislative session with support from Texas Farm Bureau (TFB). The legislation established the framework for the program and reflects a broader effort to invest in production agriculture across the state.
“This program is a direct result of farmers and ranchers voicing the need for additional tools to remain competitive and continue growing their operations,” Tracy Tomascik, TFB associate director of Commodity and Regulatory Activities, said. “AgPRO gives farmers and ranchers the opportunity to reinvest in their businesses.”
The competitive grant program offers awards ranging from $5,000 to $500,000 and requires a cost share that varies by award amount.
Projects requesting $100,000 or less require a 10% match. Projects between $100,000.01 and $250,000 require a 20% match, and projects above $250,000 require a 30% match.
Funding is distributed on a cost-reimbursement basis.
Eligible applicants include agricultural producers directly engaged in farming, ranching, forestry, aquaculture or nursery operations in Texas.
Examples of eligible projects may include:
- The purchase of tractors, irrigation systems and other agricultural equipment
- Improvements to barns, greenhouses, storage facilities and fencing
- Upgrades to livestock handling systems such as working pens and loading facilities
- Apiary expansion, including hive equipment and honey extraction systems
- Adoption of innovative technologies or conservation practices that improve efficiency and resource management
“Every operation looks different, and this program recognizes that,” Tomascik said. “Whether it’s improving efficiency, expanding production or investing in new opportunities, AgPRO provides flexibility for producers to meet their specific needs.”
Applications must be submitted by May 14 at 5 p.m. through TDA’s online grants system.
Tomascik noted the program highlights how legislative efforts can translate into direct support for agriculture.
“Policy work like this is important because it leads to resources farmers and ranchers can use,” Tomascik said. “When agriculture has a seat at the table, we can help deliver programs that make a difference on the ground.”
