Nominations for the 2020 Farm Bureau Farm Dog of the Year contest are now open.

The contest, entering its second year, celebrates the farm dogs who work with their farmers or ranchers to bring food to tables and bowls.

“Again this year, we’re excited for this special opportunity to honor these loyal members of our farm and ranch families,” American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) President Zippy Duvall said. “Farm dogs lighten the workload and enrich our lives by providing faithful and playful companionship.”

AFBF is partnering with Purina for the contest. The two organizations are looking for dogs who are helpful, playful and obedient.

“At Purina, we recognize the important role dogs play on the farm and in the hearts of families everywhere,” Jack Scott, vice president of Sustainability at Purina, said. “Purina has a long history of sourcing nutritious, sustainable ingredients from American farms to make our foods. We salute farmers and the important work they are doing to steward their land and help feed generations of people and pets.”

The 2020 Farm Bureau Farm Dog of the Year winner will receive a year’s worth of Purina dry dog food and $5,000 to help offset travel expenses to attend the AFBF Annual Convention in Austin on Jan. 17-22, 2020, where the winning canine will be recognized.

A maximum of four runners-up will each win $1,000 in prize money.

Woody, an Australian shepherd owned by Texas Farm Bureau members Joe and Mary Sheeran, won the 2019 Farm Bureau Farm Dog of the Year contest.

Farm Dog of the Year nominations—which include written responses to questions, still photos and a video clip (optional)—must be received by Sept. 2 for consideration.

Applicant’s owners must be Farm Bureau members to enter.

Eligibility guidelines and submission requirements can be found on the AFBF website.
