Several agricultural groups reiterated their opposition to Japanese tariff demands as part of the final Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement.

Officials from the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), National Pork Producers Association (NPPC), National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), U.S. Wheat Alliance and National Oilseed Processors Association joined Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on a conference call to discuss the agreement.

Japan is demanding tariffs on exports that would compete against its “sacred” products—rice, sugar, wheat, dairy, pork and beef.

According to Agri-Pulse, the TPP is a regional trade negotiation between the U.S., Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. It would account for nearly 40 percent of global gross domestic product and would affect future trade agreements.
