The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Bexar County Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee will present the 2018 Beef Cattle Short Course in San Antonio Jan. 9 and 16.
“This course is for beef cattle producers at all experience levels and will offer information on a variety of topics of interest to producers,” said Sam Womble, AgriLife Extension agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Bexar County. “In a relatively short time period, this course will provide a lot of practical advice and useful knowledge that can be applied to almost any beef cattle operation.”
Three hours of Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units—two in integrated pest management and one general—will be offered for attending both sessions.
The Jan. 9 course agenda will include:
- Developing replacement heifers and adding value to cull cows and bulls: Dr. Joe Paschal, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist in Corpus Christi.
- Cattle fever tick situation: Dr. Brodie Miller, Texas Animal Health Commission regional director in Beeville.
- Supplemental feeding strategies: Paschal.
The Jan. 16 agenda will include:
- Brush/grazing management 101, back to the basics: Drs. Bob Lyons and Megan Clayton, AgriLife Extension range specialists in Uvalde and Corpus Christi, respectively.
- Drones and their application on rangeland: Clayton.
The program will be in room 101 of the Performing Arts building of Palo Alto College, 1400 Villaret Blvd.
Registration will begin at 6 p.m. both days, with programs starting at 6:30 p.m. and concluding by 9 p.m. The cost is $15 per person for both days. The Bexar County Farm Bureau will sponsor refreshments both evenings.
