Mother Nature struck again. This time it’s the blackberry crop in Medina. But local growers—including Love Creek Orchards—are still open for business, despite the diminished crop due to hail damage.
Love Creek Orchards, a you-pick operation, was first hit by hail March 18. The crop suffered hail damage every other week for the next eight weeks, orchard foreman Randy Hoelscher told the Texas Farm Bureau Radio Network.
“This year, we’ve got about half a crop due to mainly hail problems. Compared to previous years, we’re going to be about half the yield,” Hoelscher said.
But the quality of the berries is as good as previous years.
“They are very good. I had some this morning. The rainfall has filled them up and they are ripening very fast,” Hoelscher said.
