Is herd expansion slowing? Increased heifer inventories at feedlots indicate it is, according to AgWeb.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cattle on Feed report shows placements in feedlots during March were up 5 percent above 2015 at 1.89 million head of calves.
The report also showed there were about 150,000 more heifers in feedlots, an increase of 4 percent, on April 1 compared to this time last year.
There was also a 7 percent increase to 1.75 million head from 2015 in cattle that went to packers in the month of March.
Texas still ranks as the top cattle feeding state with 2,500,000 head for 1,000-plus capacity feedlots.
