Victoria County Farm Bureau donated 967 pounds of pork to three community organizations as part of the statewide Farmers Feeding Families program.
The county organization purchased two pigs from a Victoria County Farm Bureau member and one pig from Texas Farm Bureau District 12 State Director Brian Adamek and had them processed locally.
“We heard about the program, and our board didn’t hesitate to donate,” said Tommy West, Victoria County Farm Bureau vice president.
Food insecurity affects one in six Texas households, and donations like this make a significant difference for local food pantries.
A portion of the pork was donated to Christ’s Kitchen, which serves 300 to 350 people a day, five days a week.
“Christ’s Kitchen told us they’ve started feeding entire families recently, and sometimes that’s their only meal of the day. We knew it was the right thing to do to donate,” West said.
They donated the remaining pork to Meals on Wheels and Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
In addition, Victoria County Farm Bureau gave a $500 monetary contribution to Meals on Wheels and donated 500 pounds each of rice and beans to the organization.
The Farmers Feeding Families program aims to reduce food insecurity at the local level and encourages county Farm Bureaus to donate livestock, volunteer time, make monetary donations and contribute food items to support local organizations and food distribution efforts.
This initiative, which launched earlier this year, is coordinated by Texas Farm Bureau’s Young Farmer & Rancher Advisory Committee.
County Farm Bureaus can donate cattle, hogs, sheep, goats or poultry to local organizations, and TFB will cover up to $1,000 of the processing costs.
Farm Bureau members can also log volunteer hours spent helping with food collection, distribution or preparation.
