Medina County Farm Bureau donated 1,093 pounds of pork to three community organizations as part of the statewide Farmers Feeding Families program.

The county organization purchased 10 pigs from youth exhibitors at the Medina County Junior Livestock Show and had them processed locally.

“We went through a local processing company, Primo Processing,” Ronnie Muennink, Medina County Farm Bureau president, said. “We divided 1,093 pounds of ground pork into one-pound packages and distributed that to two food pantries in Medina County and a portion to one of the local churches that has their own food pantry.”

Food insecurity touches one in six Texas households, and donations like this, Muennink noted, make a significant difference for local food pantries.

Medina County Farm Bureau donated the pork to Medina County Food Pantry, Devine Food Pantry and God’s Country Fellowship Food Ministry.

“The need for food is so great at the food pantries that they have to pass out vouchers so they have enough food, and they do a weekly distribution from our local food pantry. And the lines are long,” he said. “It’s evident that these families need help getting food on their tables.”

In the past, Median County Farm Bureau has made monetary donations to local charities like Meals on Wheels. They hope to continue making donations in the future and have established a committee to research and plan future donations.

“The delight we see the food pantries for the donation shows the gratitude they have for the donation,” he said.

In addition to the ground pork, Medina County Farm Bureau also gave a monetary contribution of $1,000 to each food pantry and church.

The Farmers Feeding Families program aims to reduce food insecurity at the local level and encourages county Farm Bureaus to donate livestock, volunteer time, make monetary donations and contribute food items to support local organizations and food distribution efforts.

This initiative, which launched earlier this year, is coordinated by TFB’s Young Farmer & Rancher Advisory Committee.
