Officials have confirmed that three additional horses have contracted Vesicular Stomatitus (VS) in the Lone Star State. According to the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC), the first five cases of VS were found in Kinney County. The latest three were confirmed in Hidalgo County.

All eight cases involved horses.

VS is a viral disease that can cause blisters, excessive saliva and sores on horses, cattle, swine, sheep, goats, llamas and other animals.

Because VS is contagious and carries symptoms similar to foot and mouth disease, TAHC encourages livestock owners to report any found VS symptoms to their vet immediately.

The horses found with VS are under quarantine and will be monitored by veterinarians.
