A pair of new agreements are expected to open additional opportunities for trade between the U.S., Mexico and Peru.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the agreements allow U.S. beef and pork producers greater access to consumers in those countries by allowing producers in the U.S. to export slaughter cattle to Mexico.
Access to consumer markets in Peru will be expanded for both fresh and chilled pork.
The agreement between the U.S. and Mexico takes effect immediately. The new agreement marks the first time in a decade that U.S. producers will be able to export slaughter cattle to its southern neighbor.
USDA has been working toward a deal with Mexico since 2008.
The agreement with Peru has been in the works for over three years now.
