The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently released its final Dicamba GE Crops Environmental Impact Statement, according to Farm Futures.
In the statement, the USDA suggests deregulation on Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans and Bollgard II XtendFlex cotton, Monsanto’s dicamba-tolerant GMO traits. USDA indicated it would publish its decision on the Federal Register in the near future.
Weeds are a significant burden for farmers, limiting crops of much-needed nutrients, sunlight and access to available water. The USDA’s deregulation could be an important milestone for farmers.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must still complete its concurrent review of the related herbicides before the herbicides become commercialized.
