With the good comes the bad. Moderate to heavy rains in March, April and May in the Winter Garden, Valley and Coastal Bend of Texas have both helped and hindered fruit, vegetable and berry crops.

Storms that brought much-needed rains in some areas also brought hail and high winds that damaged and even destroyed some crops, according to Southwest Farm Press.

Some cabbage growers in the Crystal City area lost the majority, if not all, of their crop due to hail earlier this year. Other areas managed to avoid damage.

Wet fields also delayed planting for some crops and delayed or prevented harvest. Both onion and cabbage harvest were delayed by rains as the crops sat in the field.

There is good news. The rainfall helped most vegetable and specialty crops in the Winter Garden, Valley and Coastal Bend.
