The story for Texas? Spring rains, and the good, bad and ugly that they bring.
Recent rains caused flooding in some areas of the Lone Star State, which damaged crop fields and pastures. About 1,500 acres of corn in Fayette County were underwater or swept from the field, said Scott Willey, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agent in Fayette County.
Willey doesn’t anticipate those farmers will replant.
Parts of Taylor County and surrounding areas also saw extreme flooding when more than five inches fell during the last few weeks.
Hailstorms also pounded some areas, including Matagorda County.
The small amounts of rainfall that fell in the Panhandle helped the soil moisture profile as farmers in the area begin planting.
Eastern and central parts of Texas, along with the Rolling Plains, received about eight inches of rain. The Coastal Bend area received two to four inches, while the South Plains received up to two. Fort Bend County received significant amounts of rainfall, posting five to 12 inches of precipitation.
