Waller County Farm Bureau (CFB) fed more than 150 area families this week with help from the Texas Farm Bureau Feeding Texas Co-op Contribution Program.
“When we received the letter from [TFB] President Boening about this program, we knew we wanted to help,” Waller CFB President Tom Paben said. “So, my board and I got together over the weekend, and we had a tentative plan on what we’d like to do by that next Monday.”
The county Farm Bureau provided $3,000 in funding to area caterers, who then worked through local school districts to distribute heat-and-eat family-sized meals to those in need.
Paben noted each food distribution package contained enough food to feed four to six people.
“Waller ISD is by far the largest district in the area, but we wanted to try to distribute this as equally as we could,” Paben said. “So, we divided our contributions equally between the three districts to try to reach as many families across the county as possible.”
Casseroles made by Waller County Catering were distributed at Hempstead ISD on Monday. Burritos were handed out on Wednesday at Royal ISD, and Best Friends Catering made Tex-Mex and King Ranch chicken casseroles that were distributed on Thursday at Waller ISD.
“It worked out well, and we’re very proud to have been able to help local businesses affected by the pandemic, as well as supply food to families who need it,” Paben said. “And it was really gratifying to see those families receive food that farmers and ranchers work hard to grow.”
