A fifth revision of the Pork Checkoff’s Transport Quality Assurance (TQA) program, which promotes responsible practices when handling and transporting pigs, was announced this week.
A new approach to understanding basic pig behavior and body language and how it contributes to a safe and positive experience for both the pig and the handler are part of the revised program. It also teaches transporters the importance of planning ahead and properly bedding and boarding trailers.
According to Farm Progress, TQA uses the most current industry-proven techniques to build consumer confidence and understanding of the quality pork products. The TQA curriculum focuses on safe handling, biosecurity and emerging diseases, such as Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv).
