Farmers and ranchers in disaster areas who are forced to sell breeding livestock (except poultry) because of drought are not required to pay tax on the gain, provided they purchase replacement livestock within four years. This tax relief applies to animals held for draft, breeding or dairy that are sold above the number that would normally have been sold if there had been no drought. The IRS has extended the time period for an additional year, to five years.
