Sugarcane aphids were identified in the Texas High Plains and in West Central Texas the first week of July.

Texas AgriLife entomologist Pat Porter found a colony of sugarcane aphids on Johnsongrass near the Lubbock airport. The aphid identification was confirmed by other Extension IPM personnel via a digital photo, according to Southwest Farm Press.

Porter says numbers remain low and sightings are not common. Aphids have not been found in Hale, Swisher or Floyd counties.

According to Porter, the aphids previously found in the Abilene area were winged and may be heading north.
