The Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) made a stop in Sealy at Selman Intermediate School Jan. 15 as part of its School Visit Program, reports The Sealy News.
About 400 fourth and fifth grade students participated over a two-day period in the TFB’s Planting the Seed program. Students prepared cups of soil and planted two sunflower seeds. They will care for, water and study the germination process of their seeds.
Workshops were conducted with students in groups of 15. The students learned about the growth cycle of cotton, its harvesting and the economic aspects of ginning the plant for fiber, meal and oil.
“There’s nothing like firsthand experience,” said Mona Oney, TFB director of Educational Outreach. “Seed, soil, plants and life. Our program helps them make that connection.”
