Genetically engineered (GE) crops are safe for consumption and have not been linked to cancer, obesity, gastrointestinal illnesses, kidney disease, autism or allergies, according to research published by the National Academy of Sciences.
Disease reports from the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom (UK) and western Europe were evaluated. The 388-page report also included reviews of more than 900 studies and data since GE crops were first introduced 20 years ago.
Patterns of long-term health problems were not found in U.S. or Canada, where GE foods have been consumed since the mid-1990s, according to USA Today said.
Work on the report–Genetically Engineered Crops: Experiences and Prospects–began two years ago and was conducted by a committee of more than 50 scientists, researchers and agricultural and industry experts.
