The season for red snapper, a highly prized fish in the northern Gulf of Mexico, is underway.
Despite the species being classified as overfished, sportsmen have seen the population recover quickly, according to sportfishcenter.org.
To be legal to keep, the fish must be a minimum of 15 inches with an unlimited measurement for the maximum length. Fishermen are allowed to keep four of the fish.
Red snapper may be taken using pole and line, but it is unlawful to use any kind of hook other than a circle hook when using natural bait, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
