Wildlife feed and wildlife feeders are popular purchases across Texas. That’s especially true in the Texas Hill Country.
Dale Garner, general manager of Wheeler’s Feed and Outfitters in Boerne, told the Texas Farm Bureau Radio Network that deer feed is the number two selling product in the store, behind only horse feed.
He said there are several feed choices available, and the type of deer feed purchased depends on the goals of the landowner or wildlife manager. Are they supplementing for maximum antler development, improved body condition, or perhaps, some of both?
Feed choices range from deer corn to high-protein formulas.
Wildlife feeders are also evolving to meet users’ needs, he said.
“Some of the things we’ve seen with deer feeders in the last couple of years is the stand-and-fill feeders. They stand about six feet tall. They’re created for people like me who are tired of climbing up and down ladders,” Garner said. “That’s really been where we’ve seen the market go is lower-profile deer feeders, where you can put in six to 12 bags.”
Garner added the mechanism in feeders has also changed a lot.
“We’re carrying a new dual feeder this year. In one 55-gallon drum you could put corn. On the other side you could put milo, perhaps, which is great for quail, or maybe protein, for a protein-corn mix. It just depends on what you want,” he said.
I have one of the stand up feeders and they do work great and are easy to fill. The only problem I have is that
squirrels, birds, etc. can get inside the cage and eat all day and night. The wire mesh needs to be much smaller to prevent this. I have added one inch sq. mesh to the inside and hog ringed it to prevent this from happening.
The other issue is that about 1/3 of the corn falls on the ground directly under the feeder. Over a period of time this area ends up a big hole in the ground from animals feeding in one spot. A large metal plate or thick plywood secured to the ground stops this.
Mike, Thanks for your feed back on the Stand and Fill feeders. We do offer an eliminator spinner plate which prevents small varmints from getting to your corn! Also, the corn shield is available for purchase, it keeps the corn funneling to outside the feeder. Give us a call if you have any questions 210.648.0979.

Anyone have any suggestions for what to do about hogs coming in and destroying the feeders?
Thanks
A combination of milo corn and roasted soy bean is an ideal feed. McKinney Feed Store in McKinney, Tx markets this product.
Diamond feeders out of Ingram, Tx have a metal plate under the spinner which throws out the feed away from feeder and I do not have any more stealing going on by coons, etc.
Build a hog panel fence around the feeding area where feed drops. Deer can hop and hogs and cattle can not get to feeder. Use plenty of T posts.
