A new coalition wants Congress to take action in the Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) dispute with Canada and Mexico in fear of non-compliance retaliatory tariffs by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Canada and Mexico challenged the revised COOL rule for muscle cuts of meat in the World Trade Organization shortly after the USDA issued the revised rule, arguing that COOL has a trade-distorting impact by reducing the value and number of cattle and hogs shipped to the U.S. market, according to Farm Futures.
A WTO compliance panel has released a confidential interim decision regarding the Canada and Mexico challenge. The U.S., Canada and Mexico will review the interim report and provide comments to the panel. The WTO compliance panel is expected to issue its final report in late July.
