Nebraska has surpassed drought-stricken Texas in the number of cattle in the state being fattened for slaughter. After dropping 7 percent over the past year to 2.44 million head in feedlots with a capacity of at least 1,000 animals, the Lone Star State fell behind Nebraska’s 2.46 million head.

But Nebraska, with 6.5 million head, still remains far behind Texas’s 10.9 million head of cattle.

According to the Tyler Morning Telegraph, Nebraska feedlot numbers could fluctuate over the next year, but the number of feed cattle in the state has generally increased over time. Nebraska is the third-largest corn producing state and offers nearly 23 million acres of range and pastureland.
