Hunters and trappers can voluntarily report mountain lion harvests in the Texas Hunt & Fish mobile app.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) recently added this option for hunters and trappers who harvest a mountain lion to enter data on that animal. The information gathered will help advance understanding of lions in the state.

The data requested in the app includes:

  • Date of harvest
  • County of harvest
  • Sex of the lion
  • Age class of the lion (kitten/subadult/adult)
  • Method of take
  • Effort (how many days hunted/trapped)
  • Photographs in specific poses (so TPWD can verify sex and age)
  • Optional text box for providing any other information

Users who already have the app downloaded on their devices will need to update to the new version to get all the latest features and to ensure proper app functionality.

The mobile app is used by hunters and anglers across the state for harvest reporting, electronic onsite registration, digital license display and more.

Texas Farm Bureau policy on mountain lions
Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) supports classifying mountain lions as a predator rather than a game animal.

TFB also provided written comments and public testimony on TPWD’s mountain lion rules. TFB recommended that the agency develop best management practices that would underscore the ethics of lion trapping, detail ways to avoid incidental captures of black bears and provide resources for trappers to increase their professionalism and efficiency.

TFB also encouraged TPWD to work with landowners and the Texas Trappers and Fur Hunters Association in developing the best management practices.
