Like many rural Texans, residents of Gray and Roberts counties must drive about an hour or more to receive major medical care in the nearest city.

So, Gray-Roberts County Farm Bureau (CFB) used Texas Farm Bureau’s (TFB) Helping Hands co-op contribution program to donate to the Medical Center League House.

“We had used the two prior co-op contribution programs offered by TFB in 2020 to donate to nine different food pantries that operate in our counties,” Gray-Roberts CFB President Jenna Bowers said. “We know the Medical Center League House helps many families, and we knew instantly this would be a great fit for the Helping Hands program.”

The Medical Center League House, located in Amarillo, offers area families seeking medical treatment a place to stay at reduced rates of $50 per night. Guests who cannot afford the $50 fee may ask the League House for decreased rates or apply for assistance such as that provided through TFB District 1’s scholarship presented in early 2021.

The League House is open to guests from the surrounding counties who are seeking medical care in Amarillo or have a loved one staying in an area medical facility. There is no limit to the number of days guests can stay, as long as the medical issue that brought them to town continues.

The League House features 31 hotel-like private rooms, a kitchen, dining room and laundry room.

“The League House is a great option for families who have to drive so far to receive medical care,” Bowers said. “We all know what it’s like to have to drive to town to go to the doctor, and it can be a struggle for some families to pay for a hotel room for a week or more when their loved one is in the hospital. So, this was a really great place for us to send our donation, because the people there work hard to take care of people in our communities, as well.”
