It should be a banner year for Texas grapes. Some estimate it will be the largest Lone Star grape harvest on record thanks to a cooler, wetter spring and summer rains.

A good grape harvest means good things for Texas winemakers.

“The (grape vines) were healthier. They generated more carbohydrates. The fruit set was better,” Mike McHenry of Wedding Oak Winery in San Saba said.

With such a large crop, Texas winemakers say there can be challenges in managing that much fruit.

“It’s a good problem to have. When we don’t have enough fruit to go around the state, then people are forced to buy from out-of-state,” McHenry said. “I think this is just great for Texas commerce and Texas ag.”
