The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is proposing to require all makers of raw ground beef products to keep records of the meat’s sources.

Retail outlets regularly make ground beef by mixing cuts of beef from various sources, according to Feedstuffs. If finalized, the proposal will require the retail outlets to keep records identifying the source, supplier and names of all materials used in the preparation of raw ground beef products.

The proposed rule can be found on the FSIS website. A public comment period will end 60 days after it’s published in the Federal Register.
