Farmers and ranchers no longer have to replace fencing every few years thanks to improvements in fence technology and fencing quality.

Fencing has come a long way from back in the 1860s and ’70s when it was developed, Gary Craig, marketing manager for the San Antonio Steel Company, said.

Select fence wires can now break over 1,600 pounds and not stretch. There are also fencing materials that last up to 50 years instead of the typical one- to two-year stint.

In Texas at least, the sale of fencing materials appears to be on the rise, thanks to an influence of new Texans.

All these newcomers to the state, whether they have five acres, 10 to 25, 30 to 50 or whatever, the first thing they want to do is get a good fence, Craig said.

After all, good fences make great neighbors.
