For the first time in nearly 20 years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed major changes to its food labels in an effort to more accurately reflect the nutritional value and calorie content of packaged foods.

Consumer advocates claim the current label is too cluttered and doesn’t provide Americans with the information they need to eat healthy, according to Farm Progress.

Requiring information about the amount of “added sugars” in a food product is one of the seven key changes in the proposal. Other changes include updating serving size requirements to reflect the amounts people currently eat and adding dual column labels indicating both per serving and per package calorie and nutrition information for larger packages.
