Americans now have more time to comment on what actions it believes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should take, if any, to protect the monarch butterfly.

According to the Federal Register, the deadline to analyze the “Risk Management Approach to Identifying Options for Protecting the Monarch Butterfly” and submit comments has been extended by 30 days to Aug. 24.

The document, which can be found here, states the EPA is concerned about lower numbers of monarch butterflies across the U.S., Mexico and Canada and that the agency intends to identify efforts to protect the butterfly by conserving milkweed. The plant is a valuable food resource for monarch butterfly larvae.

The EPA is seeking the public’s input on how it can best protect the species while meeting the herbicide needs of farmers, ranchers and other landowners.
