Clay County Farm Bureau continues to meet the community where it needs it—donations of hamburger meat.

The county organization recently donated over 400 pounds of hamburger meat to Clay County Rescue Mission, Senior Citizens Center of Henrietta and Senior Citizens Center of Petrolia.

“This is our fourth year to do this,” Tommy Henderson, Clay County Farm Bureau vice president, said. “The senior citizens centers and the mission tell us that beef is one of the hardest commodities to come up with. We like to support our community, so this is one way that we can do that.”

North Texas, where Clay County is located, is a major beef-producing area, and every member of the Clay County Farm Bureau board of directors raises beef.

“We’re all beef producers on our county board. We produce a lot of beef in this area,” Henderson said. “We think it’s important to give back to our older population, as well as to others who may be a little less fortunate.”

It’s neighbors helping neighbors. Despite the drought and tough year farmers and ranchers faced in 2022, county Farm Bureau leaders still wanted to help out.

“We’re proud to do this and give back to those right here in our community,” Henderson said.

Henderson and Jack Pickett, another board member, delivered the meat donations in late April with their grandchildren.

“We’re able to show our grandkids how we give back to our community and how Farm Bureau plays a role in that, too,” he said.

They’ve also taken 4-H and FFA members with them to make the donations in previous years.

“Every one of us is a beef producer, so beef is what we enjoy donating, and we always love to have students go with us,” Henderson said. “We get to show them what Clay County Farm Bureau is all about.”
