A goat in Kinney County is the first confirmed case of anthrax in Texas for 2014.
The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has quarantined the premises near Brackettville. TAHC rules require proper disposal of the affected animal and vaccination of other cattle on the premise prior to the release of the quarantine, according to TAHC.
Anthrax is a naturally occurring organism. It is a bacterial disease caused by Bacillus anthracis and is not uncommon for anthrax to be diagnosed in livestock and wildlife. A vaccine is available for use in susceptible livestock in high risk areas. To prevent accidental spread of the bacteria, follow TAHC procedures, including reporting suspected animals to a private veterinary or a TAHC official and the proper handling of the animal.
TAHC will continue to monitor the situation for possible new cases across the state. For more information regarding anthrax, contact your local TAHC region, call 1-800-550-8242 or visit www.tahc.texas.gov.
