Drought conditions continue to affect the Lone Star State through the loss of jobs in the beef cattle business and high prices for consumers.

According to Business Journal, Wayzata-based Cargill Inc., one of the largest beef producers, is closing its feedlot in Lockney.

The continued drought has damaged beef cattle herd numbers, and as a result, will hike beef retail prices. Cargill stated the demand for beef is steady, but there isn’t enough water in the area to support the cattle. Cargill also closed a major beef-processing plant last year, leaving thousands without jobs.
