Despite the emergence of what appears to be a La Niña weather pattern in the Pacific, El Niño is still sending rain to the Lone Star State.
According to the Texas Water Development Board’s (TWDB) recent Water Weekly report, the rains brought on by the weakening El Niño in recent weeks alleviated drought conditions across much of Texas.
Only two percent of the state is experiencing drought conditions. Parts of West Texas are abnormally dry, while parts of the Panhandle are facing similar conditions or are experiencing moderate drought.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts those areas will receive relief by the end of July.
Despite the rain, TWDB reports statewide reservoir storage is only up slightly at 5,000 acre-feet. That’s mostly because many East Texas reservoirs are already full.
