Local farmers’ markets are beneficial to Americans, communities and farmers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has proclaimed Aug. 3-9, 2014 as National Farmers’ Market Week.
An official proclamation was signed by Secretary Vilsack and marks the 15th Annual Farmers’ Market Week, recognizing the important role that farmers’ markets play in the agricultural and food economy, according to the USDA.
Thousands of farmers’ markets are held across America, offering fresh, affordable and healthy food choices. Farmers’ markets give Americans the opportunity to meet their local growers who showcase their wares, helping communities connect with and support local farms.
The development of U.S. farmers’ markets is a cornerstone of the USDA’s Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative, which coordinates the USDA’s policy, resources and outreach efforts related to local and regional food systems.
