After widespread concern within the meat industry, House appropriators are seeking to ensure the Obama administration excludes environmental factors from decisions regarding the federal dietary guidelines for meat consumption.

The scientific advisory panel assigned to recommend changes to the current dietary guidelines said sustainability should be factored into the guidelines.

However, a draft fiscal 2016 appropriations bill for the Agricultural Department and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) includes a provision that would strictly limit the 2015 recommendations to “matters of diet and nutrient intake,” Agri-Pulse reported.

Today, the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee is set to review the bill, which would also delay the implementation of a new FDA rule requiring restaurants, supermarket delis and convenience stores to put calorie counts on menus and menu boards.
